Mission: Taking Chances
Location: USS Bonne Chance, Deck Five, Lt. JG. Selune's Quarters
Timeline: 2265

Alpha shift... the notification had come through a few days earlier, giving her plenty of time to prepare for the fact that tomorrow at 0700 she was expected to report to the Bridge for Alpha Shift. And Selune was most definitely not ready to face that just yet.

Since coming aboard she had spent a lot of time trying to familiarize herself with the ship. It was worlds bigger than her last assignment on the small survey ship with a big name. Her musing stopped mid-thought as she reconsidered... no, actually she had spent a lot of time trying to get used to the sudden size of her quarters and considered the small break something of a holiday, a chance to catch up on must overdue lounging and the activities that came with it, reading, stretching... napping.

In hindsight maybe she should have spent that time familiarizing herself with the ship. But hey, what was the worst that could happen... she sharply cut off that avenue of thought before it drove her into a neurotic mess.

Her face scrunched up as she tried to recall the feeling of abject wonder she had felt when the news arrived; instead all she felt was the rising angst of the potential career ending first day approaching. Clawing her way back to bed she hunted for the soft plushie she had been given on her first day at the academy, wrapping herself around it and idly wondering if she could simply hide here. Maybe they wouldn't notice?

Groaning to herself, she rolled over to stare at the clock for the seventh time in as many minutes; one hour, forty two minutes before she had to be there. She glared at it, silently daring it to change for what seemed an eternity. One hour, forty one minutes. Apparently the universe had called her bluff.

After several more of her precious few remaining minutes ticked past she gave up willing the universe to stop, pushing herself into a sitting position and ran her hand through the thick mane of white hair threatening to invade her face. It was a small step from there to her feet and she soon fell into the meditative dance she had been pointedly told to practice by her first flight trainer.

Technically it was less of a dance and more of a martial art made infinitely slow, but after several seconds the distinction fled along with all else other than the next flowing step. Selune's mind slowly relaxed into a tranquil pool as her body easily fell into the well practiced routine, so much so that it wasn't until her alarm chirped up that she realized that there were thirteen minutes before her shift started.

Selune's mind cracked as she stared stupidly at her timer. Thirteen minutes. Her consciousness surged back in a blinding flood as she rushed around the room in near panic. The complicated rituals of waking up and preparing for her shift were lost in a blurred haze as she dressed, redressed with the correct uniform and bolted from her room.

With luck, at least she wouldn't be late for her first day.

With even more luck she would remember that the alarm had been set an hour early.
