Doc In A Box: From Fedepedia, the Federation encyclopedia

A 'Doc-in-a-Box' is a deprecating sobriquet for a physician who provides primary health care, usually at an hourly rate, at a free-standing ambulatory care clinic, an in-store medical clinic that will provide a surprising variety of procedures for patients-treating your pimples, testing for pregnancy and even suturing wounds shut. While studies have shown that "drive-thru doctors" generally provide a respectable level of care, the truth is that these clinics are seldom staffed by actual M.D.s and instead often rely upon nurses and physician assistants. Critics also charge that clinics replace the traditional doctor-patient relationship with an la carte approach.

Doctor Yarrob rather looked forward to these clinic weekends. Once a month, he would come and spend his time in one of these walk-in clinics far from his luxury home in the arcology and treat the occasional cold, infection, laceration or the odd household injury that came his way, all while shooing away the occasional thrill-seeker seeking advanced pharmaceuticals to enjoy recreationally on the precept of suffering from an unidentifiable phantom pain.

It gave him a change of pace from the House of Asclepius Healing Center, where he tended to treat sports-related injuries, patching vacationers back up after they hurt themselves doing things they had no business attempting. Here in the less advantaged sectors he got to do more and see more interesting patients than the entitled, privileged and usually demanding guests of Risan hospitality. Here he got to practice real medicine, on real people who really needed him.

He was just finishing running the test results on a young Risan native who was suffering from Malphesean mumps, obviously brought on by exposure to a tourist. A small injection of tetrahyclortiscene and she would be fine after a day of bed rest. The young woman looked apprehensive as he programmed the hypo, slipped the cartridge in and approached her with a gentle smile.

"Don't worry my dear... this won't hurt, I promise you," he said, and Nurse Jaxa stroked the patient's arm as she subtly held the young girl still. The doctor applied the hypo to his patient's neck, and the quiet hiss of the hypo doing its work was lost in the sound of a tremendous explosion outside, followed by a thumping series of crashes and a long sustained screeching noise.

"What in the world..." he said, the injection having been delivered. He reassured his patient and left her with his nurse, then stepped out into the reception area just in time to see a two-meter tall half-naked Vulcan prostitute storming in the door with a dirty fairy princess under one arm and a badly injured man under the other, followed closely by what appeared to be a Trill escort who was seemingly slapfighting with a snow-white Caitan in a cocktail dress.

A change of pace indeed.

The elfin package was bellowing, "STOP IT YOU TWO and bring me muh purse!"

"What... what are you... can I help you people...?" the surgeon sputtered as the alien amazon in the leather jacket (that still had a smoking burn across the back of it) who was wearing fishnet hosiery, a thong, boots and apparently nothing else deposited her charges in chairs and called to the Trill escort, who stopped long enough to drop a collection of a purse and a PDD onto the diminutive fairy's lap, then moved to the doorway and took up a position beside, it, surveying the situation outside.

"Yu, insure clearing the vehicle of Fi's belongings, double-time before we have to lock down. Sel, fast internal perimeter scout, I need to know points of entrance and egress, move with a purpose and report please." She turned on Yarrob and raised an eyebrow, "Doctor, this man is badly injured and in need of medical attention. Fi, are you all right?"

The rumpled fairy smoothed her skirts and mop of curls. She straightened up and with as much dignity as she could muster after being tossed around like a toddler said, "Aye... I'm alreet."

The curly-haired moppet who appeared to be the leader of the girl gang turned to look up at the doctor and when she spoke, she did so very gently, "This gentleman is wounded. We're helping him. There are bad men with disruptors chasing us, so you might want to call tha' authorities," backing up what the glamazon had said earlier.

A quick glance over what he assumed to be the women's pimp confirmed multiple contusions and minor lacerations accompanied by severe swelling and cranial trauma. The man was indeed badly injured- he looked like he had been on the losing end of an argument with these four, in fact. He motioned behind him to summon Nurse Jaxa to help the injured man back to a bed, then turned to address the rest of them.

The Vulcan stood up directly in front of him... and up, and up. She was nearly a head taller than he was, but then, she was wearing some rather impressive footwear, he noted. Obviously she must have paid for a number of cosmetic alterations to her ears, brows and a few other body parts to appeal to a specialty clientele, because she definitely did not comport herself like any Vulcan he had ever encountered, and she certainly wasn't built like one. His suspicions were confirmed when she smiled down at him in what he assumed was supposed to be reassurance.

"I apologize for all of this chaos, doctor... it isn't our usual modus operandi, but I'm afraid we've had to be rather improvisational in the past hour or so, due to some rather extenuating circumstances. We're actually not what we might appear to be at the moment... in reality we're... um, excuse me, but what are you staring at?"

The buxom beauty was accustomed to men not making eye contact with her... not only was it par for the course for her, but in most cases she actually encouraged it. After all, men who were distracted were that much easier to manipulate, and she had no qualms about that in the least.

However, in this case she was attempting to present and explain herself as a reasonable sentient being who had a perfectly good reason for standing there in her underwear. And being a medical professional she somehow had not expected him to be staring at her breasts as she spoke to him, nor to be quite so fascinated by them. He was a doctor, after all, and they were only mammary glands.

"My eyes are up here if you have somehow forgotten your basic anatomy, doctor," she sighed as he reached out to touch the pendant she was wearing, which she had thankfully clasped on a short chain about her neck back before this expedition had begun. She flinched back slightly as he brushed it with his fingertips, then he stepped back. His expression hardened, changing from one of confusion to one of suspicion. He produced his tricorder and scanned the faux Vulcan's chest, then the returning Trill, moving the scanning wand over both the Human and the Caitan.

His expression moved from one of suspicion to a hardened, cold expression.

"Thieves. You are jewel thieves... that makes sense enough, I suppose."

"I beg your pardon?" The faux Vulcan asked with an indignation that was practically believable as she raised a perfectly arched eyebrow and offered a slight head tilt, as the fluffy bedraggled human turned to address him and with obvious confusion.

"We're what?" Fi cocked her head and stared back at the doctor, "We asked you to alert tha authorities... I dinna think thet jewel thieves would do thet," she tried calm reason.

" Thieves? I think not" Yuna retorted angrily. "We brought this stuff with us from our Starship."

The doctor was regaining his faculties rather quickly. "That pendant around... that one's neck. That's the Star of Risa... every schoolchild knows what it looks like. I thought it looked a bit too authentic to be one of the souvenir versions they sell, and my scans confirm it- that's a flawless Risian dark star sapphire. That's the real thing, though why you would choose to wear it is beyond me. And that," he pointed to the necklace that Yuna was still wearing, that had so elegantly set off her beautiful ensemble earlier but still looked good on her in Chary's black stretch dress. "That is the Blood of the Emperor, the crown jewels of the Rigel 7 Hurloon dynasty. I saw the exhibit three days ago, and my scans confirm, those are not fakes or reproductions- those are real flawless stones and real precious metals."

There was absolute silence for perhaps ten seconds as the news that somehow the shinies the women had fetched out of Fiona's collection of pretties were in point of fact actually priceless stolen artifacts.

Fiona's eyebrows disappeared beneath her tousled curls, "Well..." she shrugged once. "I ahhh... didn't think they looked familiar boot they were in me bags," the Scot stammered. "I've collected a lot oov baubles and..." Her cupid's bow mouth formed a perfect O. She looked over at Yuna in shock. "That man!... the one in tha gray suit... he was in line with me in coostums..."

Before the chaotic conversation and barrage of questions could ensue, Selune returned, breathless. "Looks like Risian security has surrounded the building and..."

"THIS IS THE RISIAN SECURITY FORCE. WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED," came a booming
voice from outside.

"Didn't I JUST say that? Sometimes I don't know why I even bother," said Selune, muttering with mild irritation.
