Mission:
Taking Chances
Location: USS Bonne Chance, Deck 6, Sickbay
Timeline: 2265
The trouble with Orion... Kolari, she corrected herself again... females was not just facing them immediately. Instead it was an ongoing buildup, like plaque on one's teeth of cholesterol in one's arteries. There had already been a few incident reports of arguments becoming overheated and becoming shoving matches, and of male crewmen getting a bit more hands-on that normal with some of their distaff colleagues.
The Kolari female's pheromones caused elevated testosterone levels. And they did not just dissipate... no, these hung around in the air for quite a while, working their mischief. And the dynamic duo had been in the brig for more than a day now, and even with the Bonaventure's filtration systems they were beginning to have an effect.
Thus she found herself in Sickbay looking for the ship's surgeon, to see if he had something that could keep their emissions dampened somewhat for the next thirty-odd hours until they were transferred. Or, lest we should forget, if he would have a moral quandary about doing so- the man took his duties seriously and he was far more xenoculturally savvy than anyone else aboard.
Siivas sensed her coming and sent Xian to intercept and divert, the young human waved at Char and motioned her into the office where she found Siivas and the Chief Communication's Officer, who was leaning up against the back wall arms crossed and looked a touch forbidding.
THAT certainly doesn't look good... something tells me I was right the second time. Well, into the lion's den, let's hear them out.
"Good afternoon gentlemen... I hope that you are recovering apace from your harrowing experience?" It couldn't hurt to start out with some pleasantries, and she was genuinely concerned... Patrick had been perfectly fine, but according to his reports the others had not fared quite so well, and while she wasn't sure just how long Deltans lived she was reasonably sure that Siivas was not a young man, by any definition of the word.
Siivas put on his "game face" and smiled at Char winsomely but he made no move (at all) to rise or wave. The whites of his eyes were almost back to normal, no longer full of burst capillaries and blood and all of the bruising had faded where she could see.
Andurean appeared to be mobile if not in a fabulous mood. He nodded to her and gave her a faint smile.
"The Captain asked me to investigate the possibility of temporarily neutralizing the Kolari female pheromone emissions until such time as we can transfer custody of them to the Surok in thirty-odd hours hence. I've done what I can but we're not quite equipped as yet for this sort of screening from the brig... though I am filing reports, making recommendations and studying the phenomenon." She paused to study the reactions from the medical staff and the Kolari native, then proceeded, choosing her words carefully.
"I am not at all familiar with Kolari biology and only have the barest hint of the sociology, nor am I aware of any potential medical ethics that I may be infringing upon to make this request... so by all means do feel free to educate me if the proposal that I am making is unreasonable."
"Women control things in the Syndicate. Neither of us are vulnerable to them," Andurean spoke, gesturing to Siivas and himself, "but the Chief Medical Officer isn't as fully recovered from his ordeal yet and could be vulnerable physically."
Hmmm... if I didn't know any better I would say Andurean was being protective of Siivas. Eh... best not to speculate, none of my business. Still rather interesting why he is a part of this discussion as if they both anticipated it though...
The scientist nodded and pursed her lips. "So it is not a moral or medical issue to suppress their emanations, it is just an issue that Siivas is still quite injured and should not be endangered thusly?"
"They're probably fairly well trained in infiltrations, intelligence gathering and assassination so Siivas in his current condition could be in harm's way," Andurean replied. Siivas looked like he was going to gamely refute it, winced and thought better.
Siivas sighed and said, "Alternatively, you could have me interrogate the Nausicaans." Xian flinched as he offered that and then left the office.
The first officer cocked her head at an angle and looked somewhat perplexed at the suggestion. "I apologize; I seem to be a bit lost in this... I understand that debriefing them will be a priority, but why would we interrogate the Nausicaans. And what does that have to do with the Kolari women?"
"Nausicaans work for the Syndicate if they're in this sector at all," Siivas pointed out, "and Nausicaans are terrified of Deltans."
"Excellent point as always, Doctor. Ideally I believe the Surok was going to handle the debriefings..." the statuesque scientist paused, brows knitting together. Xian hadn't cared for that idea at all, it seemed, and Siivas did not particularly seem to be quite up to his usual levels of energy... so why was he offering? There was probably information to be gleaned, and it was possible that the discomfort Nausicaans felt towards Deltans could be used to gain that information more freely.
"No, Doctor... while my medical skills are quite meager in comparison to your own, I don't feel that anything the Nausicaans might relay to us is worth further endangering your health over. I will pass on your offer to the Captain, but your own health and safety are a much higher priority to me than any intelligence they may posses that will not likely come out eventually." While the facts might come out later that she'd erred in that assumption, she stood by the decision- the Chief Medical Officer was too vital to the welfare of the entire ship to risk in what she viewed as a non-critical venture such as this.
Siivas shot a rueful glance at Andurean, who smirked very slightly.
"In the meanwhile is there a biochemical agent that could be administered to dampen the Kolari women... ideally I could administer it myself if necessary. It seems logical as I am uninjured and it is unlikely that they would overcome me, particularly with a security detachment on hand." There was a subtext here that she wasn't grasping, she was sure of it, but she trusted Siivas. He would tell her what she needed to know, and would keep the rest to himself, dispensing the knowledge, like medicines, when needed.
Andurean cleared his throat slightly, paused and then spoke, "Most Kolari don't actually produce the pheromones, very few actually have the trait. More of us are telepathic than have the pheromone ability. But," he paused again as if struggling with something, "the Syndicate long ago mastered the formula to create a time release gel that imitates the pheromones so closely that it is nearly impossible to tell the difference. I will assume that the females have no taken advantage of the bathing facilities or the laundry since being aboard?" he asked, looking up at her.
"Ah, no, actually." Charybdis admitted. "Given the nature of their quarantine, I had not made such arrangements. So you are indicating...?"
"I'd stun them and run them through a sonic shower in full hazmat gear," Siivas advised drily, "if it were me. It might be far more amusing to use a water hose and decking brushes and let the security department have a go at it." He smiled sunnily up at her.
Andurean snorted, clearly amused by the idea. "Or you could let the Sulamid do it..." he said slowly, Siivas smiled broadly and gave the Kolari and appreciative look, the senior evil mastermind appreciating his budding apprentice. "Proot told me that I smell like whale excrement to a Sulamid," he chuckled.
"I will bear your recommendations in mind, gentlemen. Thank you for your input... it has been most... illuminating." She stood and smiled. "I hope that you feel better soon... please do let me know if I can get you anything to make you more comfortable."
